Even the faint light filtering through the ice-frosted windows in the atrium couldn’t soften the students’ anxious expressions. They stood close together now in small groups to keep themselves warm. But the cold wasn’t their sole concern. After the dean’s assembly earlier this Sunday afternoon, they had a lot more to talk about.

They weren’t the only ones. Our interview with the school janitor minutes ago had provided Michael and me with a clue to Nat’s late-night outings. I couldn’t wait to bounce my theory off Michael.

We remained silent to prevent curiosity seekers from picking up snippets of our verbal exchange. We’d grown accustomed to walking past two or more individuals who paused in their conversation to listen to ours. Unlike our earlier ventures, students were used to seeing us wandering around by now. They even greeted us by our first name.

Once we were out of earshot, I said to Michael, “I’m positive Nat was leaving the girls’ dorm to go meet her boyfriend Tuesday night when the janitor spotted her.”

“It’s possible.” A muscle twitched along his jaw. Something was on his mind.

“What are you thinking?”

“If Nat went to visit her boyfriend, how did she end up in the trunk of a car?” He shook his head. “Too bad I didn’t think about it before. I would have asked my techie friend to expand his search to include the boys’ residence.”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself, Michael. Besides, the surveillance system doesn’t cover every inch of the campus. We don’t know where Nat went that night. We can’t even confirm that Nat and Andrew were in the trunk of the car in the first place. The video we watched wasn’t clear.”

“I’m not giving up on this. We’ll have to figure out every path Nat could have taken that evening and who she came in contact with.”

I couldn’t hide my eagerness. “I think we should explore the infamous ghost tunnel Sophie told us about.”

Michael nodded. “We will. We need to interview other people first. I’d like to visit the chapel.”

He surprised me. We had no files on personnel connected to the chapel. “Then let’s stop by Audrey’s office to get the information.”

“We should interview her too,” he said. “She might be able to help us in areas no one else can.”

“Maybe she knows something about that secret passageway,” I said.

He opened the door to Audrey’s office. The draft caused the candle flames in the room to flicker and project a flurry of silhouettes around the room.

Audrey looked up from a file on her desk. “Oh, hi there. I was about to go looking for you two. Mrs. Desmond would like an update on your investigation before the end of the day. You can find her in the library until five o’clock. She claims the books provide additional insulation against the frigid weather.” She adjusted the wool scarf around her neck. “Can I help you with anything?”

“We’d like to ask you a few questions,” Michael said.

“Me? Oh…okay.” She closed the file. “Have a seat.
